NACPA is pleased to announce an all-new study guide for the publication Just Treatment for Those Who Work for the Church. Now Just Treatment and its guide are available as a kit, providing an excellent resource to take a deeper look at justice in all organizations.

First published 33 years ago, this 2019 edition is a vital resource to help all Church employers better understand the Gospel message and moral principles that guide all our employment decisions.

“NACPA’s Just Treatment was important and groundbreaking before and the updated revision is even more critical now,” notes John Carr, Director, Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, Georgetown University and a NACPA keynote speaker.

Available separately or as a kit - the Study Guide is available as a PDF download, the guide is only available printed and mailed. Click the image above for pricing.

HOW TO USE THE Guide and Kit
The kit is versatile and may be used in a small group setting or with larger groups.

  • For example, consider gathering either a group of peers or people of diverse levels of responsibility within an organization. The advantage of peers who work directly with human resources at the same level is that they can share common issues and experiences as well as different perspectives. This may include pastors or principals.
  • Another approach: welcome those who have diverse levels of responsibilities within a system to gain insights from various points of view. This could promote understanding of how issues impact people in different ways. An example would be gathering a mix of directors and managers within a system. Either way this resource, used individually or with a larger group, will help participants “take a deeper look and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Gospel message and moral principles that undergird their employment practices” (Chapp et al, 2019, p. 19).
  • If you are interested in purchasing multiple copies of the kit, contact Regina Haney for pricing: [email protected]

2022 National Diocesan Salary Survey

This 258 page report includes information about compensation (such as salaries, other taxable cash and non-cash income) as well as benefits and support (such as time off work, insurance and retirement benefits) of diocesan employees working in central offices. In order to make the data more comparable, the report excludes other institutions such as arch/diocesan charitable institutions (e.g., Catholic Charities), educational institutions (e.g., universities, college seminaries), health care institutions (e.g., Catholic Health Services, hospitals, hospices, nursing homes), and others (e.g., cemeteries, senior housing projects) in the U.S. as of Spring 2022.

The National Association of Church Personnel Administrators (NACPA) conducted this survey, believing that the information helps diocesan leaders provide a more just and equitable work environment for both priests and lay personnel. In an increasingly competitive work place, this data is critical for recruiting and retaining outstanding employees. This includes information about compensation (such as salaries, other taxable cash and non-cash income) as well as benefits and support (such as time off work, insurance and retirement benefits).

The survey was designed and implemented by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University. Out of 171 arch/dioceses in the United States included in the final contact list, 117 arch/dioceses (68%) provided usable responses.

NACPA extends a special note of gratitude to NACPA members Beverly Escamilla, Bob Roper, and Deacon Clarence McDavid for their review of the 2017 survey to make this survey more user friendly and relevant. And especially, Michal Kramarek, Ph.D. of CARA, who coordinated the survey and followed up with respondents to encourage excellent participation.

Commissioned by the National Association of Church Personnel Administrators (NACPA) and the National Federation of Priests’ Councils (NFPC) Survey conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), Georgetown University, Michal J. Kramarek, Ph.D., Fr. Thomas P. Gaunt, S.J., Ph.D.

Parish Job Description Manual (2017)

Edited by William P. Daly, SPHR, Revised 2006

Sample job descriptions for many positions within parish settings, including administration, liturgy, catechetics, music ministry, pastoral counseling, social ministry & many support staff positions.

This publication is a 2006 revision of the Parish Job Description Manual, produced by NACPA in 1995. This new edition is entirely rewritten. In it, we present job descriptions from parishes of various sizes in different parts of the country and sample job descriptions taken from materials distributed by dioceses for their parishes. Most of the job descriptions have changed from the previous edition. We have added descriptions for many new titles. The job descriptions appear in the manual in occupational group order, e.g., ministry positions are grouped together, as are office staff positions, maintenance positions, etc. The Table of Contents lists all the job descriptions in Occupational Group order.

The detailed Index that follows the Table of Contents should ease the process of finding descriptions for specific job titles. The editor selected samples based on the desire to provide a variety of approaches to naming and describing parish jobs and to provide both brief and more detailed descriptions. Some descriptions received minor editing to reflect recent changes in federal law or to conserve space in the book.

Available only as a PDF download. When purchasing via Credit Card, it is accessible immediately.
