A Response to the Killing of George Floyd

Following the unrest stemming from the death of George Floyd gives cause to recall the source of racism. According to the bishops’ document, Open Wide Our Hearts Racism arises when—either consciously or unconsciously—a person holds that his or her own race or ethnicity is superior, and therefore judges persons of other races or ethnicities as inferior and unworthy of equal regard.” This unrest reminds us that racism is not a thing of the past. Rather, it is a reality and we are called to confront it.

This moment calls us to examine our attitudes and actions. Do we truly see others as our brothers and sisters in Christ? This may be an opportunity for those with human resources responsibilities to review policies and hiring processes—how we treat current and potential employees.

Looking forward, let us call on the Holy Spirit to inspire us to respect every life, to keep in mind that we are “...one single body, so it is with Christ”(1 Cor.12:12).
